Wednesday, January 15, 2020
13th is an award-winning, mind-opening, hard-hitting documentary about the long-term effects of structural racism in American society. When the 13th amendment to the Constitution was ratified in 1865 it ended slavery. But the story of racism in America didn’t end – in fact, it was just getting started. This film is essential viewing for anyone interested in learning more about the long-term, insidious impact of structural racism, and how white supremacists ensured continuing oppression by building discrimination into so many of the institutions we take for granted. In the end, this is spiritual work – to awaken from unconscious bias and work for the alleviation of the suffering of all people. In order to explore the film’s many insights we’ll have a discussion after the screening.
